On February 29,2024, Malaysian Consul General in Guangzhou Suraiya led a team to visit Zhaoqing to gain an in-depth understanding of Zhaoqing’s history, culture and industrial development status, and to conduct in-depth exchanges on strengthening cooperation between the two parties in cultural and tourism interaction, sister-city exchanges, and economic and trade exchanges. Vice Mayor Xie Guikun met with Sulayya and her party. Zou Xiaoling, director of the Municipal Foreign Affairs Bureau, accompanied the meeting.

Xie Guikun said that as China continues to deepen its high-level opening up to the outside world, the "Belt and Road" construction is advanced in depth, and the construction of a community with a shared future between China and Malaysia is accelerated, there is a huge space for Zhaoqing to participate in all-round exchanges and cooperation between China and Malaysia. We hope to take this exchange as an opportunity and the sister-city relationship as a link to establish a long-term friendly exchange and communication mechanism between the two places, deeply expand friendly exchanges and practical cooperation in various fields, steadily expand economic and trade exchanges between the two sides, accelerate industrial docking, and promote cultural exchanges. Exchanges and mutual learning between tourism and sports will jointly promote the friendly development of China-Malaysia relations, bloom more brilliant flowers of friendship, and bear more fruitful fruits of cooperation.

Sulaiya said that she was very happy to visit Zhaoqing, which has profound historical and cultural heritage and beautiful natural scenery. It is hoped that both parties will deepen their understanding, promote practical exchanges and cooperation in various fields, and achieve win-win development.

Sulaiya and her party also visited Song City Wall, Qixingyan Scenic Area and other places, and cultivated soil and watered the friendship tree in the "Consul Forest".

It is reported that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Malaysia and the "Year of China-Malaysia Friendship", and China-Malaysia relations are ushering in new development opportunities. In 2013, Guangning County, Zhaoqing City and Sibu City, Malaysia, established sister cities. The two places carry out various forms of cultural, economic and trade exchanges every year and achieve good results. Currently, Zhaoqing is actively promoting the establishment of a sister city relationship between Guangning County and Miri City in Malaysia. The two parties have signed a memorandum of understanding on the development of friendly exchanges and cooperation in 2022.
