On September 15, 2024, Hualan Village, Liandu Town, Fengkai County ushered in the triennial Autumn Festival-Taotan Festival.

The event attracted more than 20,000 guests from afar to celebrate the harvest, taste the harvest, talk about the harvest, and immerse themselves in the joy of the harvest.

The cultural parade was wonderful

At nine o'clock in the morning, the double lions and folk art parade team paraded around the village, showing the unique charm of Fengkai County's folk intangible cultural heritage projects to tourists and villagers.

In addition, more than 350 "daughters" who married out dressed in their best clothes, accompanied by the sound of gongs and drums, brought gifts and collectively agreed to return to their parents' home to express gratitude to their hometown and fellow villagers, celebrate the joy of the harvest, talk about hometown feelings, and seek common development.

Ten thousand people revel in "Taotan"

The "Taotan Festival" in Hualan Village is one of the "Fengkai Autumn Festival" activities, which belongs to the intangible cultural heritage of Zhaoqing City. This custom has a history of 422 years. It is a traditional folk activity for local villagers to express their respect for the land god and celebrate the joy of the harvest.

The highlight of the event is "Taotan". When the sun shines on the base of the pond, the folk activity officially begins.

Ten "tan heads" on duty among the villagers stood on bamboo rafts carrying raw tea bran, some beat gongs, some steered the boats, and the fish would faint after sucking in the raw tea bran. The tan heads would pump water to drive the fish to the edge of the pond, and gongs and drums would be loud on the shore. Around the pond, the silk workers used silk nets to catch fish.

The first big fish salvaged was used for worship and blessing, and then everyone shared the fish and held a banquet to enjoy the harvest.

It is understood that more than 1500 kilograms of fish were caught on the day of the event, and these fish were distributed to each household by the "tan heads" after the scouring of the pond.

It is worth mentioning that this year's scouring of the pond festival has been further expanded, with richer content, and it has also cleverly integrated modern elements with traditional culture, adding activities such as the Fengkai County Folk Art Parade, Fengkai County Agricultural Products Market, Food Festival, and Light Show. While inheriting and carrying forward the intangible cultural heritage, it actively explores the innovative development of folk culture.

Qiu Canhui stressed that the whole county should adhere to the overall planning and coordinated advancement, anchor the primary task of high-quality development, focus on the current status of county industrial development, accelerate the construction of green building materials and Guangdong-Guangxi Fengkai Park, expand and strengthen the "one pig, one chicken, three trees" and Liandu goat industries, and develop calcium-based new materials, drinking water and other industries at a steady pace. The construction of industrial platforms and industrial leaps will promote the economy to continue to recover and improve, and help Fengkai's economic work improve quality and efficiency.
